Leviticus – Chapter 18: Unlawful Sexual Relations

Leviticus is starting to get good!  Last time we learned about how eating blood is bad and in this chapter, Chapter 18, God explains to us that unlawful sexual relations are bad.  Sex and the Bible.  Can’t go wrong there!

“No one is to approach any close relative to have sexual relations. I am the Lord. Do not dishonor your father by having sexual relations with your mother. She is your mother; do not have relations with her. Do not have sexual relations with your father’s wife; that would dishonor your father.” – Leviticus 18:6-8

Well, okay, I can go with this, more so because it’s just plain weird.  However, if both people are consenting to the sexual act, who cares?  When it comes to first cousins, it is not illegal everywhere, and the places where it is illegal, laws were put in place due to birth defects in the offspring of first cousins, although the chances of birth defects from first cousins reproducing is MUCH lower than previously thought.  The next several verses discuss sexual relations with close family members.  I’m not sure anyone really needs God to say this.  I think most of us would just say, um, no, no thanks.  But again, if both individuals are consenting to the act, who am I to tell them no?

“Do not dishonor your father’s brother by approaching his wife to have sexual relations; she is your aunt.” – Leviticus 18:14

Your father’s brother’s wife is no longer a blood relative to you.  So the argument of incest doesn’t apply here.  Again, if both adults consent, I can’t argue.

“Do not have sexual relations with both a woman and her daughter.” – Leviticus 18:17

Is it a threesome?  Two separate sexual relations?  This may not be my cup of tea, but if everyone is consenting, what’s the problem?

“Do not give any of your children to be sacrificed to Molek, for you must not profane the name of your God. I am the Lord.” – Leviticus 18:21

Um…okay, because God is the only one you can sacrifice your child to?  In fact, God commanded Abraham to sacrifice his own son!  The act was stopped at the last second, but God still commanded a man to sacrifice his son.

“Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is detestable.” – Leviticus 18:22

This one is for the apologists who claim the Bible doesn’t condemn homosexuality.  It does.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m 100% in favor of same-sex marriage.  Just pointing out the Bible does say that men have sex with men is wrong.  Note, however, that nothing is said about women having sex with women.  God loves gay sex if it involves lesbian action!

“Do not have sexual relations with an animal and defile yourself with it. A woman must not present herself to an animal to have sexual relations with it; that is a perversion.” – Leviticus 18:23

It’s rare I say this, but I agree with the Bible 100% on this last verse.  Why?  Because the animal cannot give consent!  Consent is the key word when it comes to sexual relations with another.

“Everyone who does any of these detestable things—such persons must be cut off from their people.” – Leviticus 18:29

Well, at least the punishment isn’t death!

That’s the end of Leviticus 18 in which God says who you can’t have sex with.  Most of these rules make sense to most people.  Most of us would say ‘ew’ to having sex with a close relative.  However, the key word missing is ‘consent’.  If there is consent between both parties, who cares?  It’s why I agree with the Bible when it says you can’t have sex with animals.  The animals cannot give consent.  That’s what makes the argument conservatives make when discussing same-sex marriage so ridiculous.  “If the gays can marry, what’s next?  Marrying animals?”  Um…no.  Think that through.  Humans can give consent.  Animals cannot.  There will never be marrying between humans and animals because one party cannot give consent.
