In Numbers 17 God proves His insecurity by getting upset at people who ask questions. He supposedly creates a stick that sprouts almonds in less than one day as an object for people to look at and say God is great. Uh…. Numbers 18 brings us the duties of priests and Levites.
“The Lord said to Aaron, ‘You, your sons and your family are to bear the responsibility for offenses connected with the sanctuary, and you and your sons alone are to bear the responsibility for offenses connected with the priesthood.’” – Numbers 18:1
I’d be alarmed if I was Aaron given God’s unjustified anger. Do one tiny wrong thing and you are dead!
“You are to be responsible for the care of the sanctuary and the altar, so that my wrath will not fall on the Israelites again.” – Numbers 18:5
Or, I don’t know, God could just stop killing people!
“You are to have the part of the most holy offerings that is kept from the fire. From all the gifts they bring me as most holy offerings, whether grain or sin or guilt offerings, that part belongs to you and your sons. Eat it as something most holy; every male shall eat it. You must regard it as holy.” – Numbers 18:9-10
How convenient for Aaron! Could it possible all be a setup by Moses and Aaron to get free food? Hmmm…. Although not so great for the females who get nothing.
“All the land’s firstfruits that they bring to the Lord will be yours.” – Numbers 18:13
And not only is it free food, it’s the finest food, unless you lack a penis.
“From now on the Israelites must not go near the tent of meeting, or they will bear the consequences of their sin and will die.” – Numbers 18:22
Yep, get too close to the tent you are toast, literally!
There are several other rules related to eating and who gets the tithe and such. It’s all basically the same. The priests and Levites get a lot of stuff the other Israelites don’t get. That and the Israelites will die if they get too close to the tent. Rapists and slave drivers are still okay, but get too close to a tent and you shall suffer from your sin. As the eleventh commandment says, thou who gets to closeth to the tent will dieth a horrible death. 🙂
