Joshua – Chapter 15: Allotment for Judah

In the last chapter we learned about the allotment of land to Caleb.  This chapter focuses on Judah.  Let’s get started.

“The allotment for the tribe of Judah, according to its clans, extended down to the territory of Edom, to the Desert of Zin in the extreme south.” – Joshua 15:1

Hmmm…this appears to be more of the same.  After warring and destroying lives, the Israelites are taking a break by determining who gets what of the stolen land.

“From Hebron Caleb drove out the three Anakites—Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai, the sons of Anak.  From there he marched against the people living in Debir (formerly called Kiriath Sepher).” – Joshua 15:14-15

So much for peace.

“And Caleb said, ‘I will give my daughter Aksah in marriage to the man who attacks and captures Kiriath Sepher.’ Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb’s brother, took it; so Caleb gave his daughter Aksah to him in marriage.” – Joshua 15:16-17

Another example of misogyny.  The daughter gets no choice in the matter.  Only men can decide who women marry.

The chapter continues for another 30-40 verses describing who gets what land.  There’s no need to bore you with those details.  There are plenty of bibles in the world you can find to read on your own if you wish.  In fact, I encourage it!  J  The book of Joshua has calmed down on death and destruction, but the peace did not last long as there were verses in this chapter describing the Israelites driving more native people from the land.  War and misogyny.  Do the Israelites know anything else?  Does God know anything else?  This is NOT love.
