Joshua – Chapter 17: Allotment for Ephraim and Manasseh, Continued

Joshua 17 begins where the previous chapter left off.  It’s a continuation of the allotment of lands stolen from the native people. Land God commanded to be stolen.  People God commanded to be killed.

“Now Zelophehad son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Makir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons but only daughters, whose names were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah and Tirzah. They went to Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the leaders and said, ‘The Lord commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our relatives.’ So Joshua gave them an inheritance along with the brothers of their father, according to the Lord’s command.” – Joshua 17:3-4

This is one of the few cases in the Bible in which women are treated fairly.  The daughters get an inheritance.  Although if you read carefully, the daughters are only getting an inheritance because there are no sons.  If there was a single son, the daughters would get nothing.

“Yet the Manassites were not able to occupy these towns, for the Canaanites were determined to live in that region. However, when the Israelites grew stronger, they subjected the Canaanites to forced labor but did not drive them out completely.” – Joshua 17:12-13

How nice of the Israelites to spare the lives of the Canaanites.  They didn’t kill them!  They only forced them into slave labor!  The Israelites are such nice people!

“But Joshua said to the tribes of Joseph—to Ephraim and Manasseh—‘You are numerous and very powerful. You will have not only one allotment but the forested hill country as well. Clear it, and its farthest limits will be yours; though the Canaanites have chariots fitted with iron and though they are strong, you can drive them out.’” – Joshua 17:17-18

The Israelites don’t have enough yet.  They must drive out more people and murder/rape more people and force more people into slave labor.

Thus far the book of Joshua exposes the Israelites for the disgusting people they are.  It exposes God for the jackass he really is.  These are not nice people.  This is not a nice god.  Murder, rape, forced slavery.  These are the biblical morals Joshua 17 and other chapters teach.  Yet the Bible is worshiped by billions.  Sickening.
