Psalms – Chapter 124: A song of ascents. Of David.

Let’s continue digging through Psalms by looking at Chapter 124 today.

“If the Lord had not been on our side…” – Psalms 124:1

Okay, let’s stop right there.  If the Lord had not been on the side of the Israelites, they would be MUCH better off as a community.  They would not have been forced from their homelands.  They would not have suffered as slaves at the hands of the Egyptians.  God hardened the hearts of the Egyptians to start all of this.  Without God, the Israelites don’t suffer!!!  Whatever comes next in this chapter is a lie for without God, millions have their lives saved.

“if the Lord had not been on our side when people attacked us, they would have swallowed us alive when their anger flared against us;” – Psalms 124:2-3

If the Lord had not been by their side, they never would have been attacked!

“the flood would have engulfed us, the torrent would have swept over us, the raging waters would have swept us away.” – Psalms 124:4-5

If the Lord had not been by their side, the flood never would have occurred!!!

“We have escaped like a bird from the fowler’s snare; the snare has been broken, and we have escaped.” – Psalms 124:7

If the Lord had not been by their side, there would be no reason to escape anything or anyone!!!

I have to admit this chapter is quite funny.  David is praising God stating the things God has ‘saved’ the Israelites from.  No.  Everything David describes as harm potentially coming to the Israelites never would have happened had God not hardened the hearts of the Israelites.  David is praising God for saving the Israelites from the very harm God himself placed on the Israelites.  David is worshipping a pseudo-hero.  He is worshipping a fake hero that is beneath every human on the morality scale.
