It’s Crazy Bible Verse Tuesday and today’s verse is a heavy dose of misogyny.
“Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of your lives.” – 1 Peter 3:1-2
Wives are to submit to their husbands so that when a husband does not believe the word of God, the wife’s submission to the husband’s every desire and need will help him see God. Seriously? If God is so good, why can’t the husbands do the right thing on their own? A woman has to give up her desires and ambitions in life so her husband can see God? Fuck that shit.
It’s Crazy Bible Verse Tuesday. Today’s crazy Bible verse contains a heavy dose of misogyny and teaches a great family value to men, women, and kids across the world!
“Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.” – 1 Peter 3:7
At first glance this appears to be a Bible verse that tells you to respect others, but we need to read it more closely. It’s great the verse says to be considerate of your wife. All husbands should be considerate of their wives. Just as all people should be considerate of all other people. We don’t, however, need the Bible to tell us this.
Unfortunately that is not the end of the verse. The verse goes on to say that wives are to be treated with respect as the weaker partner. The weaker partner??? What makes women weaker? Lack of a penis? This is the misogyny. Even when attempting to say something nice, the authors of the Bible can’t help but put women down! I wish more women would read the Bible and become familiar with the very clear misogynistic message it sends. No woman anywhere on this planet should EVER think of herself as the weaker partner.
Today’s crazy Bible verse moves away from the recent trend of the penis to slavery. I previously discussed Exodus 21:20-21 where God condoned slavery. Christians love to point out that the Old Testament is no longer valid because Jesus came to wash away our sins. However, the New Testament still condones slavery.
“Slaves, in reverent fear of God submit yourselves to your masters, not only to those who are good and considerate, but also to those who are harsh.” – 1 Peter 2:18
Having a horrible time as a slave? Is your master working you to near death? Is your master beating you? Don’t worry, God says this is okay, so just keep doing what you’re doing and submit yourself to your master, no matter how evil he is to you.
On top of that, why does a loving God demand that His creations fear Him? I’ve never understood this and will never understand it. A loving God does NOT demand fear. A good parent never requires his/her child to fear him/her. God, again, demonstrates that He is the worst parent in the Universe.
