James 5:14-15

It’s Tuesday!!!  I love Tuesdays because Tuesdays are crazy Bible verse days!!!  Woohoo!!!  Today’s crazy Bible verse comes from the book of James in the New Testament.

“Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up.” – James 5:14-15

The Bible tells us to pray over the sick and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord.  Doing so will result in the Lord raising them up and healing the sick person.  That’s it.  No medicine.  No surgery.  No hospital stay.  Just prayer.  When has prayer, by itself, worked?  I’ll tell you when.  Never!  There are many illnesses in which people pray and get better, but of course there’s no control to determine that prayer did the healing.  For example, I can pray all I want over a broken arm.  Even seeking no medical attention, the broken arm will heal.  In fact, I broke my pinky toe several years ago and sought no medical attention.  There’s actually very little a doctor can do for a broken toe accept wrap it and drain it if necessary.  So I wrapped it myself and it healed.  It would have healed had I prayed or not.

Using prayer as a healing method will always eventually lead to one thing.  Death.  In fact, there are still religions today that use prayer as the only method of healing.  Christian Science is one example.  It has a very misleading name that has nothing to do with real science.  Members of this religion do not believe in seeking medical attention.  They believe in prayer only, and as a result, people die of very curable diseases.

So to conclude, forget the prayer and oil the Bible suggests and go to the doctor!
