Recap of Zephaniah

I recently finished the last chapter of Zephaniah on this blog. Zephaniah was supposedly a minor prophet who spoke the word of God to others. The chapter was short, with just three chapters. All three chapters spoke of the ways in which God was going to destroy the lands. Basically three chapters of death and destruction with a few verses at the end of the last chapter in which God decides to let a few meek people live.

In other words, God killed all of the critical thinkers who would possibly question things, leaving only those he has put so much fear into they are scared for their lives. A moral god? Fuck that shit.

Zephaniah – Chapter 3: Jerusalem

Today we take a look at the last chapter in Zephaniah, a short book with just three chapters.

“She does not trust in the Lord, she does not draw near to her God.” – Zephaniah 3:2

The lack of trust could stem from the fact God has broken trust many, many times.

“The Lord within her is righteous; he does no wrong.” – Zephaniah 3:5

No wrong? God has killed babies and children and had many women raped and murdered and taken as slave wives. No wrong? Give me a fucking break.

“I have destroyed nations; their strongholds are demolished.” – Zephaniah 3:6

But remember, God loves you. LOL!

“The whole world will be consumed by the fire of my jealous anger.” – Zephaniah 3:8

This is not a perfect god. This is not an all-knowing god. This is not a just god. This is an evil god.

“The Lord, the King of Israel, is with you; never again will you fear any harm.” – Zephaniah 3:15

Famous last words that will prove false.

And thus ends the book of Zephaniah. These are the words of a domestic abuser who causes great harm and then turns around and says “but I love you, please forgive me.” And just like a domestic abuser, God will turn right back to harming others.

Coming Soon: Jeremiah – Chapter 1: The Call of Jeremiah

Zephaniah – Chapter 2: Judah and Jerusalem Judged Along With the Nation

In our last chapter in Zephaniah we learned God was going to destroy and kill EVERYONE! Yes, everyone! Has he backed off in Chapter 2? Let’s find out.

“Seek the Lord, all you humble of the land, you who do what he commands. Seek righteousness, seek humility; perhaps you will be sheltered on the day of the Lord’s anger.” – Zephaniah 2:3

God is offering the people an out clause. They just have to do everything he asks, even if it is killing others, and he will save their lives.

“‘Therefore, as surely as I live,’ declares the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, ‘surely Moab will become like Sodom, the Ammonites like Gomorrah—a place of weeds and salt pits, a wasteland forever.” – Zephaniah – 2:9

Several verses in this chapter are devoted to the different peoples God is going to destroy.

“The Lord will be awesome to them when he destroys all the gods of the earth.” – Zephaniah 2:11

But don’t worry, because God will be awesome in the process of killing people. LOL.

God is going to let a few people live apparently, while showing his awesome skills of killing.

Coming Soon: Zephaniah – Chapter 3: Jerusalem

Zephaniah – Chapter 1: Judgment on the Whole Earth in the Day of the Lord

A new chapter, Zephaniah, so let’s just right in.

“The word of the Lord that came to Zephaniah son of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hezekiah, during the reign of Josiah son of Amon king of Judah:” – Zephaniah 1:1

God supposedly speaks to Zephaniah.

“‘I will sweep away everything from the face of the earth,’ declares the Lord.” – Zephaniah 1:2

But remember, God loves you!

“‘When I destroy all mankind on the face of the earth,’ declares the Lord” – Zephaniah 1:3

God makes it clear he is destroying everyone.

“The great day of the Lord is near—near and coming quickly.” – Zephaniah 1:14

Wow! The “great day” is the day that God destroys everyone on Earth??? LOL!

“I will bring such distress on all people that they will grope about like those who are blind, because they have sinned against the Lord.” – Zephaniah 1:17

All those sinning babies are about to meet God’s wrath!

“In the fire of his jealousy the whole earth will be consumed, for he will make a sudden end of all who live on the earth.” – Zephaniah 1:18

There’s no doubt about it, God is going to destroy everyone on Earth.

God is not mincing words in this chapter. He’s pissed that his all-perfect self created less than perfect humans and now his perfect solution is to destroy and kill everyone. SMH.

Introduction to Zephaniah

It’s time to move into a new book of the Bible, Zephaniah. Zephaniah is not one of those well known books. I never remember it discussed in church or bible study classes I attended. I don’t remember it in my confirmation classes as a kid. Then again, I only really remember the pastor making us go to church and memorizing the first 5 books of the Bible. So what happens in Zephaniah?

Zephaniah is a minor prophet, which is part of the reason this is a little known book in the Bible. But hold on, there’s no solid evidence the book of Zephaniah was even written by a person named Zephaniah. LOL. The Israelites are not following all of God’s rules, some of which are jus stupid and silly, so Zephaniah comes along and tries to convince them that if they start following God’s rules, God might forgive them.

Zephaniah is a short book in the Bible consisting of just three chapters. We’ll take a look at each of these chapters and then move into Jeremiah.
